In Black Widow Spiders, readers learn that only the female is black and red. The male is much smaller and is brown. That’s a surprise! These spiders have venom that is 15 times more powerful than rattlesnake venom, which means we need to stay away. Young readers will learn this and so much more after reading Black Widow Spiders. A fun activity described at the end of the book is to a little research and find out what other animals use red or another bright color to warn away other animals. This book won’t stay on the shelf long. Highly recommended.

Trapdoor Spiders begins with an insect wandering the forest floor, only to have a spider jump through a trapdoor and grab in to scurry back to its burrow, closing the trapdoor behind it. Tarantulas is a unique spider book in that some young readers may already have some prior knowledge of the topic, given that this spider can be a pet. Readers will learn more about the 900 or so species of tarantulas and what makes these spiders so unique. Labeled diagrams and photo illustrations add further to reader knowledge. Vulture View

Take a look at the daily life of a vulture from its graceful soaring flight to its meticulously clean feathers. This species provides a great service by cleaning up after everyone by eating what no one else really wants. Carrion eaters are an important part of nature’s food web and vultures do a great job of it. End matter and author’s notes have been updated and reflect the newest information available about these often maligned scavengers. Illustrations have been color enhanced as well.

Add this award-winning book to your nonfiction section. It will become a favorite among students, who will delight in the daily life a this majestic bird. If you already have it, I suggest an update. It’s worth it! Highly recommended.

Champion Chompers, Super Stinkers and Other Poems by Extraordinary Animals

Part science, part poetry and part riddle/puzzle book – what’s not to love about this delightful book? Nineteen animals that are record-holders of some sort (fastest, slowest, tallest, stinkiest and so forth) are introduced by a personified mask poems and a portion of the animal to tease the reader. Turn the page and the full animal is there along with a paragraph detailing its claim to fame along with some well-chosen extra facts. At the end, there is information about protecting endangered animals and suggested websites. There is also guidance about measurements and mask poems. Finally, there is a glossary and recommended reading for further investigation.

The fun game-like format along with the accessible poetry and information makes this a book that should be in everyone’s library. It is nonfiction that can be used in so many ways (examples are animal units, nonfiction studies, poetry units, conservation lessons). But, not only is it a great book for lessons. It is a fascination, fun read for students. And, that makes it a winner in all areas!
