My Town= Mi Pueblo

written by Nicholas Solis; Illustrated by Luisa Uribe

Two cousins live on either side of the Mexico-U.S border and share what they love about their homes as well as their enjoyment of their cousin’s town. Each two page spread shares a unique aspect of their towns in both English and Spanish. They share about their houses, schools, markets, holidays and time together in both towns. This sweet story ends with the cousins and their families crossing the border, a bridge over a river, with guards on both sides and both kids expressing the wish that visits could be easier. They stand overlooking the river and share that both towns feel like home.

This story is great on many levels. The lovely illustrations, which offer details of life on both sides of the border, are perfect for some compare and contrast discussions. The English and Spanish is simple enough for language learners and read alouds. And, students will notice the joy that these two cousins experience no matter what town they are in together.

Just One Itsy Bitsy Little Bite / Solo uan mordidita chiquitita

Written by Xavier Garza with vibrant illustrations by Flor deVita, this bilingual picture book is fun both for young children as well as older student learning Spanish. It is a cute Day of the Dead counting story: one skeleton, then two, and more and more, come to the Joaquin’s door wanting his mother’s traditional pan de muerto. They eat it all up, not leaving even one itsy bitsy little bite for Joaquin.

Cinco Monitors coleccion de oro, Five Little Monkeys Storybook Treasury

Charming book with dual languages!  This would be perfect in a bi-lingual class, or even a class with one bi-lingual student.  What is most appreciated about this collection of traditional little monkey stories, is that each line is English and then under nead it , in a different color, is Spanish.  It is so easy to compare the two languages and encourage LEARNING and understanding both languages.  Darling illustrations team up with the bilingual text to make this a winning book.  Unexpected and delightful, in the back of the book is an “about the author” piece, written in both languages, some lessons on drawing monkeys, and the music and words for a sing-a-long.  Highly Recommended.
